Journey to Bethlehem is an immersive, interactive Christmas experience offered by our church, Bethlehem Baptist, here in Lancaster, SC. Visitors step back in time to witness the most important event in history in a way that feels real and unforgettable. If you’re looking for things to do in Lancaster for Christmas, this is one of the most meaningful events you can attend.
Guests begin their journey with a time of fellowship as they register for the census and receive their coins for taxes. From there, they witness the Angel Gabriel delivering messages to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. The shepherds then guide visitors along the path as they search for the newborn King.
Along the way, guests encounter a tax collector, stroll through the bustling market, and interact with villagers eager to share their handmade goods. Every stop adds depth to the experience, especially when visitors finally approach the inn and learn where the precious baby has been laid. But the journey doesn’t end there—guests also meet individuals whose lives were forever changed by our living Savior.
I love Journey to Bethlehem because it brings our church family together in such a special way. It represents far more than just four nights of performances for the churches in Lancaster that participate in community events like this. It’s a ministry built on months of preparation, prayer, and joy.
It’s the sewing ladies who have worked on costumes since January, pouring love into every stitch. It’s the builders and lighting teams who create the structures of Bethlehem with excellence and care. It’s our hospitality team preparing meals, keeping volunteers fueled and encouraged throughout each night.
It’s also the market vendors who spend all year crafting items to gift to our guests as they pass through the village. It’s the security team keeping the parking lots safe and helping traffic flow smoothly. And it’s the greeters and actors who step out of their comfort zones to make every guest feel welcome and every scene feel alive.
We all work together to share the gospel and highlight the true meaning of Christmas with our community several times each evening. Journey to Bethlehem isn’t just a performance—it’s a ministry opportunity that reaches people from Lancaster, SC, and beyond. It’s a chance to shine the light of Christ in a busy season.
My favorite moment each night is when we gather in the sanctuary after the last group has finished the experience. We come together for praise, worship, and testimony, giving God the glory for everything He is doing through this event. These moments remind us why we serve and why Journey to Bethlehem matters so deeply.
My prayer is that everyone who attends will come and see—and then go and tell—not about our production, but about our Savior. I pray the real meaning of Christmas shines brightly and that lives are changed through this simple, powerful journey. If you’re searching for things to do in Lancaster this Christmas season, we would love to welcome you to Bethlehem.
