Who Knows? God May Turn and relent; He may turn from His burning anger so that we will not perish. Jonah 3:9 ESV
With all the turmoil going on today in The United States, it has a lot of people on edge. I have to admit that it has given me a little bit of anxiety as well. No matter who you support, things have not gone good. We are nearing the end of the week and there is still no clear winner of the Presidential election. Even still, one thing is clear, God knew this was going to happen and it is all part of His plan.
One thing we can say, the last 10 years have been vastly different than those of the rest of my life. Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, the US surely prospered. Since that time, The United States of American has gotten very liberal in its views. From a Christian perspective and moral compass, it can be compared to that of Ninevah in the Bible. God told His Prophet Jonah not once, but twice to go and preach there. Why would He do this? Simply put, He cared for them.
Over the last past month I have shared a few of my daily devotionals from a book I have been reading; Jonah Over Coffee: A Runaway Prophet and God’s Extraordianary Grace by Matt Henslee. The author states; “What a change! A people who had no room or interest in God are now crying out to Him in prayer. Those two words “Who knows” speak to the fact that they recognized they have no right for acceptance, but are wholly dependent on God’s grace and mercy. Any yet, think about it, why would God send Jonah, not once but twice, if there was no hope? The Ninevites mattered to God enough that He was unwaveringly determined to get His message to them, and they responded in spectacular fashion” (Henslee. 2020).
Maybe as Christians we have gotten to relaxed and used to things going good for us? Maybe we have forgotten to seek God and pray for our country and our leaders no matter who they may be? Maybe we didn’t have room for God just as the Ninevites did not? The fact is our country has gotten very crude and has the mentality that anythings goes now. God still cares about us and we are still one Nation under God. Maybe God is testing us, but we do not know. One thing is true though, now is the time for us to humble ourselves and seek His face. We need to be in prayer for our country more than ever. If we truly want to see revivial break out, it must start with us. God tells us this because if revival starts with us, it spreads to the household, then to our friends and neighbors. Then it spreads to our church, then our community. Then to our county, and then to our state. Then to our Country. And you can see how this goes.
After Jonah followed God’s will and went to Ninevah to preach, revival broke out in that country and it change them. No more where they wicked. The king of that country even humbled himself and bowed before God. Wouldn’t this be amazing if this happened in our country too?
